The long-anticipated book from the Museum of New Mexico Press, The Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple: Freemasonry, Architecture, and Theatre, about the Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple, our historic stage scenes, and elaborate period costumes is nearing completion and is expected to arrive in stores in late May 2018. The Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple is edited by Wendy Waszut-Barrett and photographer Jo Whaley with essay contributions from Rick Hendricks (New Mexico State Historian) and our very own Khristaan Villela (Director, Museum of International Folk Art).
This project is several years in the making and Jo Whaley’s photographs of the Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple’s scenes and costumes are a unique glimpse into early-twentieth century fraternal theatre. Jo Whaley’s sympathetic approach to photographing the scenes, costumes, and performers gives the reader the true sense of the solemnity and depth of meaning that the Scottish Rite Degrees convey.
